"The Highland Piper" will pipe the arrival of the guests to the church/venue. The arrival of the bride to the church/venue, pipes the bride from the car to the door of the church/venue, and then pipes the bride down the aisle to meet her groom.

The piper also plays during the signing of the register; this keeps your guests awake.

After the ceremony the piper will pipe the bride and groom out of the church/venue. Alternatively I will be outside ready to take over from the organist. The piper will play for about 20 minutes while the photographer organizes the bridal party for photographs.

At the reception venue "The Highland Piper" pipes the arrival of the guests, and then pipes the arrival of the bride and groom.

After the bride and groom have had reception drinks and officially greeted their guests at the receiving line, "The Highland Piper" pipes the bride and groom to the top table.

I conclude my duties for your memorable day by performing the traditional piper's toast, piping out, leaving you to celebrate your wedding breakfast.

The definition of Ceilidh.

TODAY, when we think about ceilidhs, we think of them as the social dances of Scotland and Ireland, a chance for people to listen to traditional music on the pipes, fiddles and drums and dance the night away. In Gaelic the word means "gathering", and the island definition of ceilidh is still a house gathering, where everyone contributes something to the evening: a song, a dance or a story well told. Ceilidhs in the Lowlands tend to be formal dances, in the Highlands they tend to be concerts.

Like country dancing, ceilidh dancing takes place in two's or in "sets" of couples. Some ceilidhs will have a caller so that everyone knows what steps are coming next. Steps for the most popular dances are outlined below, but don't worry . . . a ceilidh wouldn't be half as much fun if everybody knew all the steps.

Some dance experts say ceilidhs have become more popular over the past two decades because young people crave a more formal style of dancing in their culture, in reaction to the anything goes approach of the club scene. Ceilidh dancing may have also have seen a resurgence because the steps and the dances are easy to learn, and above everything a ceilidh is a social event where everyone gets the chance to take to the floor, especially in the "progressive" dances such as the Canadian Barn Dance where each lady moves on to the next gentleman. "Singles" ceilidh nights are now common in Scotland, as are ceilidh-discos and most Scottish weddings will include at least one ceilidh dance that everyone, young and old, can join in with. Ceilidhs are also held by Scottish expatriates all over the world, from London to Lahore, and New Zealand to Nova Scotia.

Ceilidhs are, of course, not without their risk of injury . . . watch out for the commonly occurring "ceilidh bruising", where your partner grabs you so hard round the arms that you are left with telltale purple marks for days.

History of the Great Highland Bagpipes.

Bagpipes are thought to have been used in ancient Egypt.

The bagpipe was the instrument of the Roman infantry while the trumpet was used by the cavalry.

The origins of the pipes in Scotland is uncertain. Some say it was a Roman import. Others believe that the instrument came from Ireland as the result of colonization. Another theory is that they were developed here independently. Historians can only speculate on the origins of the Scottish clans piob mhor, or great Highland bagpipe, but the Highlanders were the ones to develop the instrument to its fullest extent and make it, both in peace and war, their national instrument.
